Wahiba Sands features massive longitudinal sand ridges that reach up to 100 meters in height. The pale gold and deep copper sand covers roughly 12,500 square kilometers.

You need a 4WD vehicle to access these deep desert areas. Drivers must deflate tires to 15-20 psi (1.0-1.5 bar) at local garages before driving on the soft sand.

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, making the dunes too hot for daytime activities. Visit between October and April for cooler weather. Plan a minimum one-night stay to experience both the sunset and the dark night sky.

These tall sand ridges rise up to 100 meters above the valley floor. They offer wide views and clear photography angles across the desert. Start climbing the dunes 30 to 45 minutes before sunset for the best lighting. The sand shifts in color from pale gold to deep copper as the sun goes down.

Find steep faces of deep red sand to ride down on a board. This activity requires no prior experience. The early morning provides the coolest sand and the best light for a riding session. Wear closed-toe walking shoes to climb back up the slopes.

Stargazing Flats

1-2 hoursDark skies

These dark, open valleys sit between the large dunes and provide near-zero light pollution. They are ideal for observing the Milky Way. Walk a short distance away from your camp lights after dinner to see the stars clearly. Plan your visit during a new moon for the darkest skies.
