Packing for the Desert
Bring high SPF sunscreen, UV sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat to handle the midday sun. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. This protects you from the sun and respects local Bedouin culture.
Desert temperatures drop sharply after dark. Pack a warm fleece or jacket for the evening. If you are driving yourself, bring a tire pressure gauge and a portable air compressor. Read our complete Desert Packing List for more details.

Planning questions
Do you need a 4x4 to visit Wahiba Sands?
Yes. A 4WD vehicle is strictly required to drive on the sand tracks off the paved roads. Two-wheel drive vehicles will get stuck.
How many days do you need?
A minimum one-night stay is recommended. This allows you to see both the sunset and the stars. Day trips from Muscat take about 8 to 10 hours.
Is there wildlife in the desert?
Yes. Scientific expeditions have documented 16,000 invertebrates and over 200 other species of wildlife in the area.
